What Exactly is Judgement?

Judgement is an aspect of human nature and it comes directly from our personal perceptions, decisions, and relationships. It shapes our understanding of the world and can either uplift or constrain us, depending on how we wield it.

When we hear the word "judgement" it can hold a negative connotation to strong opinions that may or may not be held by everyone.

Judgement is a vital tool for navigating our personal world. We use it to discern right from wrong, make decisions, and form opinions on important matters to us. It enable us to establish boundaries and protect ourselves from harm. In this context, it is a valuable asset.

How did judgement get a bad rap?

Judgement can create division, foster intolerance, and limit our potential for growth. When we pass judgement on others or OURSELVES without understanding the full context, we risk perpetuating stereotypes, stifling creativity, and hindering personal growth.

So, how can we use judgement as a constructive tool while avoiding its pitfalls? The answer lies in practicing discernment. Discernment enables us to make informed decisions without succumbing to prejudice. For example, the statement, "All men are ignorant towards women in business." This statement is based on personal perceptions. We all don't necessarily hold the same perceptions. The statement is not open to another perception as it is stated in factual terms and when presented to someone who may have a different opinion may potentially cause them to not respond in order to stave off potential conflict.

Another way of stating this perception without judgement is to own the perception, with "I", and describe how you arrived at your conclusion. For example, "I personally have experienced situations where I observed men failing to recognize women in authoritative positions." Quite different, wouldn't you agree. In this last example, it leaves room for open discussion AND the opportunity to learn something different from other perspectives. It opens dialogue!

By learning to recognize and manage our "judgements" with wisdom and compassion, we can create a more harmonious and empathetic society. After all, it is through conscious introspection and an open mind that we can better understand ourselves and the world around us ultimately leading to a more enriched and fulfilling existence.

Your words potentially have power to heal or harm, it may be wise to wield them with compassion.
